Phil Haralam - Ripe - 2013

Small Favors VIII

An Invitational and Juried Show

May 3 through June 2, 2013
Harrison Gallery

Small Favors challenges and engages artist’s creativity in new and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces for this exhibition. For some artists, the work they create is similar to what they normally make, although at a reduced scale. Others use it as an opportunity to break away from what they create in their daily studio practice. Regardless of this choice, the works exhibited are incredibly varied in material, form, and aesthetics. Though small in scale the artworks created for this exhibition are huge in impact. Each work is exhibited in a Plexiglas wall mounted cube.

Old Friend / New Collaboration

Internal Logic

(A collaboration between

Phil Haralam, Michael Schwartz, and Aristotle)

This week marked the first completed collaboration with of one of my closest friends and confidantes: Michael Schwartz. For more than 10 years, Michael and I have spent countless hours discussing the art and literature of geniuses from Gauguin to Goethe. We’ve debated classical theories of aesthetics and refined our own, challenging one another to better understand ourselves and our work. (We accomplished a surprising amount of this while also throwing darts and blasting the Rolling Stones. Like I said, we stuck to the classical.)

"Internal Logic" is the first effort of a creative partnership that we plan to continue exploring in a variety of modes and media, until as Michael says, "some combination of fame, wealth and sabotaging spouses inevitably tears us apart."

While I work primarily with form and color as a sculpture and vessel-maker, Michael’s main contribution is literacy. Able to both read and write English, Michael works as an editor and contributing writer for The Onion. For more on our intentions and process, please find the complete “Internal Logic” text below.

In addition to its presence here and Michael’s Twitter feed, @SchwartzFlash, "Internal Logic" will be on display at Gallery360 in Lancaster, Pa., from April 24-May 19 as part of its exhibition, “Literarily: Design & The Written Word.”
